012.55 Hungary
by Laszlo Csaba <ib006csa@huearn.bitnet>
Since 1988 the Information Infrastructure System (IIF) has been providing
national and international network services for the Hungarian R&D community.
The "Academic" segment of the system is the HUNGARNET ( Hungarian Academic
Research Network ).
At present the system is based on a X.25 data network. The higher level
services like e-mail, bulletin board, terminal access to databases are provided
for several thousand users of 200 institutions.
The Hungarian segments of the EUnet and the EARN networks are providing e-mail
access through a gateway of the national mail system.
In October 1991 an IBM 3090 mainframe was installed in the framework of IBM's
Academic Initiative. The computer will be an EARN node . The community of high
energy physicists is connected to HEPnet via CERN.
In October by sharing the EARN line the first TCP/IP connection was
established. The COCOM limitations for Eastern Europe are gradually
disappearing. As a result of this in the near future we are going to install a
national pilot IP network. A 64 kbps international digital leased line has
already been ordered and the CISCO routers, UNIX servers and workstations are
being delivered or are waiting for delivery.
